Dusty and the Babysitters
Dusty has been on cows for the last 4 weeks. She has been learning to track cows and move. One on one with a weaner steer in the yards gets a bit interesting (North Coast NSW Saleyard Cattle have a lot of ear – Brahman)
We have also been teaching a few of the quieter ones to be baby sitters.
I have been putting these baby sitters in yard with a big biscuit of hay in middle of areana. During my warm up I circle these and when they come out I poke them back to the middle. It has taken a few weeks and they are starting to accept there role. I can now put in a fresh calf and it mobs up with them. I can then walk up and use babysitters as a herd – push the new one to face and work it.
This tends to slow things down but I do get more turns.
Dusty now has a 1/2 sister Miss Stylish Pepto q-68428 from a One Stylish Pepto / Miss Silver Poppy. This yearling roan filly is sharing her paddock.
